Research Engineer II or III (especially Electromagnetics or Electrical 

Compass Technology Group (CTG) is a woman and veteran owned small business focused on developing and manufacturing innovative electromagnetic measurement devices. We are looking for an experienced Research Engineer II to join our Engineering team.  Especially looking for electromagnetics (RF, microwave, or millimeter wave) experience.  We may also hire at a Research Engineer III level. Position Summary 

A Research Engineer at CTG is involved in the development and implementation of products and custom applications related to microwave characterization of materials and components. Engineer roles may include modeling & design, measurements, quality assurance, technical writing, research & development, and product manufacture. The Research Engineer is expected to specialize in some of these roles and be able to support all the other roles as needed. The Research Engineer is also expected to lead longer-term projects that organize other personnel and achieve milestones within a defined budget and schedule. Cooperate with and contribute to the company's Quality Management System. The successful candidate should have good attention to detail, critical thinking / problem solving abilities, and good communication skills. 

Ideally, this Engineer will be a generalist with the following desirable skills/experience: electrical or electromagnetic devices and design, antenna design or measurement, vector network analyzer use, automation (robotics, micro controllers, etc.), software and hardware integration, embedded systems, and algorithm development. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

TECHNICAL WRITING: Review, write and edit product manuals, proposals, presentations, and reports. Prepare comprehensive manufacturing specifications, technical case studies and client facing documents. Document processes to be referenced by others. Oversee others doing this function. 

RESEARCH: Initiate and facilitate internal or contract research to support new designs and technologies. Develop new innovations to meet customer requirements for materials characterization and coordinate with other departments to manage long-term projects. Oversee others performing this function. 

DESIGN: Have advanced use of computer aided design software to create mechanical drawings and/or electromagnetic circuits/structures. Perform microwave characterization of materials and components, modeling & design, numerical simulations (e.g. FDTD, FEA, MoM), and electronic testing. Utilize experimental, theoretical, and numerical approaches to aid in the design of new electromagnetic test fixtures. Delegate and oversee others performing this function. 

PRODUCT MANUFACTURE: Own the process of manufacturing measurement systems for customers. Determine what is done in house or sent out for quotes. Collaborate with the team to develop algorithms and custom software. Oversee others performing this function. 

CUSTOMER ORDERS: Own the coordination of assembly and delivery of off-the-shelf equipment orders, including entering and tracking project progress in Jira and other company systems, coordinate & assist with quality testing. 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Own projects, lead interactions with customers, prioritize & keep project schedule, coordinate cross-team efforts (e.g.software, mechanical, and electrical engineers). Utilize deep knowledge of electromagnetics and experience with physics-based algorithms to innovate electromagnetic solutions to complex problems. Oversee others performing this function.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) 

Level II 

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science.  2-4 years hands-on engineering experience 

Comfortable managing the safe use of power tools.  Experience gathering vendor quotes (e.g. machine shop), Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and with navigating computer/network file systems. Specialty software proficiency (e.g. Matlab/Octave, Python, CAD, Jira/Confluence) 

Electrical, Physics, or Computer Engineering background, 5-20% Travel Required, PCB design and manufacturing, hands-on experience. 

Level III:  

Bachelor + 5 years, Masters (preferred) + 3 years, or PhD 

Advanced experience in microwave electronics and/or robotics/automation 

Experience with leading research efforts and owning processes in the categories mentioned above. 

Physical Demands and Work Environment 

Able to lift up to 50 lbs. 

Work in a business office space that includes a lab and production environment.
